NATO formally labeled the?mysterious leaks in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines detected earlier this week the result of deliberate sabotage and warned that such attacks would be met with a collective response from the organization.?The leaks highlight the vulnerability of Europe's energy infrastructure and risk further increasing tensions between Russia and the West.?And the winter cold will render unbearable suffering to countless people around the world…?Well, the pipelines have been central to the energy crisis that has enveloped Europe in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Nord Stream 1 providing a crucial pathway for Russian gas to reach Europe until earlier this month when Russia closed the pipeline.?Germany Warns Nord Stream Pipeline Disaster Could Be Among Worst Gas Leaks in History, an environmental disaster in the Baltic Sea.?Officials estimate some 300,000 metric tons of methane have vented into the atmosphere from that site alone, which would put it among the worst gas leaks in history. Methane is a significant contributor to global heating. It can linger in the atmosphere for decades before breaking down, with about 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide.??Danish and Swedish officials on Tuesday said two leaks had been identified on the Nord Stream 1 Russia-Europe gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The news came only hours after a similar development on its twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2.
