In part 1, I've explained the difference between IaaS, PaaS and SaaS Cloud environments, but what about the advantages and disadvantages of each of those environments? Subsequently, in part 2 we covered the advantages and disadvantages of the IaaS, and in part 3 we've discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the PaaS environment. Now in this article we'll be covering the advantages and disadvantages of the SaaS environment.
- You’ll get an off-the-shelve ready to use product, which will be most likely a hassle-free experience,
- Great flexibility is offered due to the fact that it can be accessed from anywhere, anytime, on any device. With this, you can now break free of the geographical boundaries and access your data no matter where you are.
- Subscription-based models provide the advantage of being able to plan & budget ahead, making it a great option for businesses.
- With a SaaS environment you’ll be able to do self-provisioning (ability to add users as needed).
- There are no maintenance or installation requirements.
- You don't pay for the hardware that runs the application.
- Forget about maintenance or license fees - with this you don't have to stress about them anymore. Nothing to install and no support worries - from a client perspective.
- Normally the license is set per seat type of license.
- Cost Effective: There are no upfront hardware costs and flexible payment methods, such as pay-as-you-go models.
- Scalability: Easily scale a solution to accommodate changing requirements.
- Data Storage: Data is routinely and continually saved in the cloud.
- Analytics: Access to data reporting and intelligence tools can be available in certain cases.
- Increase Security: SaaS vendors take security very seriously and invest heavily in state-of-the-art technologies & highly skilled professionals to secure their services.
- In a SaaS environment you are limited with the amount of possible customization and loss of control on updates.
- Depending on the laws and regulations of the area, data may need to be stored in specific locations. If the SaaS provider is unable to guarantee this for you, then it might not be a feasible option for your business.
- The customer could get locked in with a particular SaaS provider.
