S1.E13: Gembloux, a copper masterpiece
In Belgium, the new town hall of Gembloux, designed by Demogo studio from Treviso, utilizes copper as the predominant material for roofs and fa?ades, blending traditional and contemporary elements. The project, carried out between 2013 and 2015, won the 1st prize in Europan 10 contest, showcasing how Italian architects were appreciated for their creative use of copper. Simone Gobbo , Alberto Mottola, and Davide De Marchi of the Demogo studio designed the town hall buildings with special attention to the city's historical and urban context.
The copper fa?ades and roofs of the town hall develop a changing patina over time. This material choice reflects an approach to its durability, its mutability, and its harmonization with the historical context of Wallonia area. In fact the buildings are close to the Beffroi, an UNESCO heritage bell tower, the église Décanale, and the Maison Du Bally).
Particularly enjoyable is the timelapse video of the town hall's construction, which you can find here.
The use of copper for fa?ade paneling, especially ventilated ones, is gaining more and more popularity, proving to be a highly appreciated material among designers.
TIP: In addition to pure copper sheets, composite materials are often used, which are more cost-effective and incorporate a small portion of pure copper solely for aesthetic purposes.
