S1.E12: An ancient material in modern architecture
The processes presented in the previous articles are just a few of the many that can be applied to copper in architecture. The skill and creativity of the craftsman or designer can lead to unique and customized results that enhance the aesthetics and originality of architectural projects.
Recently, I read an old article by Gilda Montesano that prompted me to search the world for architectural studios that have used copper in their projects. Her article highlights the success of Italian architects abroad for their achievements using copper in architecture. The European "Copper in Architecture" competition recognizes projects that use copper in cladding, roofing and other architectural elements.
Examples of success include the Dolomitenblick project by Plasma Studio , completed in 2012, with copper balustrades that blend into the natural topography, and the Alps Villa by ARW Botticini+Facchinelli , a sustainable residence with a corrugated oxidized copper exterior cladding. Copper was chosen for its durability, versatility and reduced environmental impact.
