What is a Dry-Run, actually ?
"A rehearsal of a performance or procedure before the real one." - definition from dictionary
This weapon of mass destruction is unmissable. Yet you must have learned to use it so that it does not turn against you. Whether you are a beginner, a junior, a senior or even an expert, a sales, a presales, a consultant, a manager or even a VP, time for individual is over, dry-run is a matter of energizing the team who is going to deliver a single unified and convincing pitch.
My 4 main principles
- Early plan it : maybe the first date to agree with the whole team. It highlights the way to reach the target. It gives a clear timeline.
- Roughly the final presentation : presenters act in their respective role exactly as expected, following the agenda. Invite colleagues who can play the customer's roles.
- Not a discussion : clarify when feedbacks will be authorized during the presentation. Each interaction has to be constructive : it's time to adjust not to build, it's time to help not to tell what to do.
- A fair space where to learn : take this moment like a gift. Presenters and attendees will learn from each other. The team will bridge the gap between individuals pitches to deliver a great performance.
Kindness is key
It is an unpassionate rehearsal : a dry-run which is objective. Being sharp on 80% is better than being unclear on 100% : the objective of the dry-run.
Introduce the rules at the very beginning to all attendees and, when your turn will come, you will fully enjoy your Objective Dry-Run in this new trusted environment and, even more, in a team for better and for worse.
