?Our aim to educate consumers around the importance of the Microbiome. This September, we are bringing it back to basics with Sásta Skin School. Today's lesson, Microbiome 101.
What is the microbiome?
The microbiome is a collection of microorganisms that are found inside and outside your body. They're like microscopic soldiers protecting and defending us daily. They're made up of mainly bacteria, fungi, and viruses. And we have more of these soldiers than skin cells.
Where can these microbes be found?
Most of these microbes live in our gut, which we call the gut microbiome. They're also found all over our body, in our skin, our scalp, our mouth, and even our belly button. They've been with us since the day we were born. All of your microbes combined weigh the same size as your brain.
What do they do?
Think of them as your closest companion, supporting you every day. When they're sick, you're sick.
Your microscopic soldiers can protect you, aid you in the absorption of nutrients, and can even influence your hormones when they become imbalanced. It can be linked to digestive issues such as IBS, Crohn's, skin conditions like acne, eczema, psoriasis, and even mental health issues.
So all in all, our microscopic soldiers protect and defend our skin's immunity. It's a vital part of our body's overall health and well being.
