RY’s good reads for World Book Day (Yes, we have our own book club!)

How do you feel about dressing up? I love it. Some of my best memories are from dress-up parties. Take my first party in London. It was Football World Cup themed, come dressed as a participating Nation. I went as the host country– Germany. Kitted out with a bum bag, elbow pads, and roller blades, I lost count of how many times I fell over that night. But all the helping hands meant I met a lot of people and made some friends for life.

So, when World Book Day rolls around each year I get to combine my love of dress-up and my other love, books. I get just as excited as the children!

Reading is powerful with so many benefits - it ignites imagination and creativity; it grows our knowledge and is relaxing and fun. It’s so powerful in fact, that World Book Day cites reading for pleasure as the single biggest indicator of a child’s future success – more than their family circumstances, their parents’ educational background or their income.

Yet, research conducted by the National Literacy Trust shows almost a million children in the UK do not have a single book of their own at home.

Whether you approach World Book Day with gritted teeth or work all week on a costume, you can’t deny that its mission to promote reading for pleasure, offering every child and young person the opportunity to have a book of their own is a good cause.

My last reads were quite heavy, so I’m craving something light-hearted. I reached out to Juniper, RY’s very own book club, for recommendations. They came back with a great list of books. If you’re also looking for your next read, check them out.
