Ryerson University

Over the past few days, the horrors of residential schools have really hit home. If I was Indiginous, my brother and I would have been part of the 60's scoop. Taken from the comfort of my family, and subjected to all sorts of inhumanity, all in the attempt to take us from our roots. Or worse, a method of killing us.

I have had the wonderful opportunity to teach the Ontario Building Code to hundreds of people at Ryerson University. I have donated portions of my wages for bursaries to needy students. I am proud of my teaching. I am no longer proud of where I teach.

I do not wish to be associated with Ryerson any longer, so I am changing my LinkedIn profile to eliminate this part of my history, until the school changes its name. The statue of Ryerson should remain as it is a good rallying place for protest. If it helps, deface the statue. But leave it there so others can also participate in their protest.

Schools should be havens of learning, debate, and growth. Indiginous children deserve an equal chance. Ryerson symbolizes the opposite, and I cannot accept this. It is time to change the University’s name.

Proud of you Sir! We all need to stand against what is morally wrong?. A place that imparts education is more sacred than any place of worship, but if we propagate the wrong message through them, the cause is lost.

I’m a proud Canadian but this part of our history is shameful.
