Ruto’s Housing Allowance
Amidst the ongoing debate on the government's expenditure, questions have emerged over allowances extended to President William Ruto and his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua.
According to a gazette notice issued by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC), Ruto and Gachagua earn housing allowance despite living in state-financed houses.
Ruto?receives Ksh350,000 for housing allowance despite being housed at State House.
On the other hand, Gachagua receives Ksh300,000 per month in housing allowance despite being hosted at the official residence of the DP in Karen.
Why Govt Pays the Allowances
According to SRC chairperson Lyn Mengich, housing allowances are paid given the salary structure adopted for public servants.
As detailed by the SRC boss, the government adopts three structures when paying salaries to state officers. The structures include basic salary and allowances among others.
"In terms of the pay structure for public servants, there are three structures. There is the basic salary and allowances and then there are the benefits. Housing and airtime are part of the allowance," she stated.
Consequently, Ruto earns a basic salary of Ksh866,250, a housing allowance of Ksh350,000? and Ksh227,500 for salary market adjustment.
In total, the Head of State takes home Ksh1,443,750 per month. This translates to Ksh17,325,000 per year.
On the other hand, Gachagua earns a gross salary of Ksh1,227,188 per month. This is broken down to Ksh736,313 in basic salary, Ksh300,000 for housing allowance and Ksh190,875 for salary market adjustment.
In a year, the second in command takes home Ksh14,726,256.
Way Forward: Following the concerns raised by Kenyans, SRC noted that it would be reviewing the allowances given the current economic situation in the country.
