THE BIG TAKE
?
Court shake-up disrupts government business?
Kenya's High Court has annulled President Ruto's majority coalition, potentially stalling government business in parliament. Without a stay order, Azimio gains control of committees, complicating business. Key tasks such as the budget policy statement face delays. Committee reshuffles loom, targeting MPs seen as disloyal, signalling political turbulence ahead. The effectiveness of Parliament hangs in the balance. ?
Cartels and corruption suffocate Nairobi?
Cartels, corruption and political ties are choking Nairobi's growth, worsening traffic congestion and poor urban planning. Exploitative cartels dominate the water and transport sectors, while corrupt officials favour private developers over residents. Public services such as health care are struggling, with few public hospitals and staff shortages. Fixing Nairobi will require tackling corruption and engaging the informal sector. ?
US aid cuts threaten Kenya's health?
Over 24 years, USAID has given Kenya $9.74 billion, focusing on HIV, emergencies and health. If this funding stops, Kenya will face a Sh28 billion HIV funding gap, with the risk of drug shortages. Responses to drought and floods also rely heavily on this aid. Without it, Kenya must find new donors or rapidly increase domestic funding.
