You Are Fired - Ruto Tells CSs

On Thursday afternoon, President William Ruto took the country by surprise after he sacked his entire Cabinet, save for Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In his address to the nation, the President detailed that the purge had been informed by the recent developments in the country that have been characterised by countrywide protests.

Despite outlining several achievements made by his government, Ruto acknowledged that Kenyans were displeased with the performance of his government.

Consequently, he announced that he had decided to send all the CSs home including Attorney General Justin Muturi.

"Upon reflection, listening keenly to what the people of Kenya have said and after a holistic appraisal of the performance of my Cabinet and its achievements and challenges, I have, in line with the powers given to me by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs," he stated.

Immediately after, all the profiles of the former government officials were removed from the State House website.

Way Forward - Unity Govt Loading

Following the vacancies, Ruto maintained that government operations would continue as usual.

He tasked relevant Principal Secretaries to oversee the operations of the government as he awaits to unveil a new Cabinet.

"I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations, with the aim of setting up a broad-based government that will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent and irreversible, implementation of radical programmes.

"Programmes to deal with the burden of debt, raising domestic resources, expanding job opportunities, eliminate wastage and unnecessary duplication of a multiplicity of government agencies and slay the dragon of corruption consequently making the government lean, inexpensive, effective and efficient," he stated.

?Significance?

The firing of the ministers is not new in the country. However, the dismissal of the entire Cabinet has not been witnessed in over 19 years.

The last President who dismissed his entire Cabinet while still in office was Mwai Kibaki. Kibaki undertook the decision after the government lost during the 2005 national referendum.?

On the other hand, the firing of the Cabinet marks a significant step for the country. The move also offers Ruto an opportunity to hire a new team that will help him deliver his manifesto.

It is yet to be known whether some of the fired CS will make a comeback.

Sample reactions of fired CSs:?

"I am deeply honoured and will forever be indebted to him and the people of Kenya for this opportunity to serve our great nation. As the Quran says, “But they plan, and Allah plans. And Allah is the best of planners” (Quran 8:30)," former Defence CS Aden Duale stated.

"Anything that paves the way for the best interest of our Nation, at this point in time, is preeminent. I most sincerely thank H.E. President William Ruto for the privilege, honour and opportunity to serve my country at the helm of the Environment, Climate Change and Forestry docket, for the last 21 months," former Environment CS Soipan Tuya stated.

Gachagua Planning to Dump Ruto - MP

On the flip side of the Kenya Kwanza government, new revelations have emerged over the fallout between Ruto and his deputy.

During an interview on?Inooro TV, Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi claimed that the DP had planned to leave UDA and form his political outfit ahead of the 2027 General election.

The MP revealed that the DP made the revelation to him during a visit to Gachagua’s house in Nyeri County on May 25, 2024.

The first-term legislator, who also represents Gachagua, added that he advised the DP against the move.

?According to the MP, his objection to the move was the cause of the fallout between him and the 'truthful man'

"I was the only person he met that day; we talked for hours, and I tried to tell him that his advisers were misleading him, just as they had misled another president," the MP stated.

"I told him that he had told the Gikuyu people that he never slept and was always watching out for them, but he was now leading them down the wrong path."
