Ruthless body guard's deathbed to miracle outlook

Former nightclub bouncer Es Kaitell has lived through a journey of violence and revenge.

“I’ve been shot, stabbed, attacked with a machete, I’ve had my head glued up. I’ve had a hammer put into the bone of my head,” he said.

“Every part of my anatomy has experienced some sort of wounding.”

His first taste of violence was at a young age as the only black kid at his school. Standing out made him a target, so turning to violence meant earning the respect of his peers.

“I knew I wanted to be a body guard from a young age because I’ve got a heart to protect people,” he said.

“I wasn’t a fighter in that I didn’t look for fights, I didn’t look for trouble. Far from it. But if it came to it, I would oblige - so to speak.”

Es developed a negative attitude towards the police after he was beaten up in the back of a police van, following an altercation with another man.

“I realised everything I’d done that was bad, it stemmed from that time I was beaten up in the back of that police van,” he said.

“Everything I’d done was in rebellion and my character changed. Very subtly your character and your nature becomes hardened and twisted.

“My hatred for the police must have fanned out towards society.”

A savage brawl later in life left Es with injuries so serious they jeopardised his life and career. On his death bed after the violent attack, he believes he was saved by a miracle.

“Something hit me and hit me hard.”
