Ruta de los Seismiles
In the west of Catamarca lies one of the highest regions of the Andes mountain range, boasting a concentration of volcanoes exceeding 6,000 meters in height. Stretching nearly 200 kilometers amidst colourful peaks, valleys, lagoons, and Andean salt flats, this route is one of the most astonishing.
The RN 60 winds its way through the heights of the Andean desert, zigzagging amidst nearly 20 summits surpassing 6,000 meters. Irresistible to mountaineers worldwide, as well as enthusiasts of trekking and 4x4 adventures.
This route can be traversed year-round, though it is recommended between October and April.
It's a chain of extraordinary contrasts: volcanoes and plains; green valleys and reddish ravines; salt flats and tundras; deserts, hot springs, and turquoise lagoons, unique landscapes inhabited by vicu?as, guanacos, and pink flamingos.
Access to the Seismiles is through the RN 60 (paved), connecting Fiambalá with the San Francisco border crossing. Among the volcanoes visible from the route are the Pissis, at 6,882 meters, is one of the world's highest inactive volcanoes and the fourth-highest mountain in the Americas; In the background, Ojo del Salado, standing at 6,893 meters, is the planet's highest active volcano and America's second summit after Aconcagua. This is a favorite among mountaineers; Expanding the view reveals Walter Peck, Cerro Tres Cruces, Nacimientos, San Francisco and the Incahuasi, where Incan ruins were discovered at its summit.
In the midst of the volcano chain, the imposing Blue, Green, and Black Lagoons come into view.
The journey can be done in a day, with several stops to take in breathtaking panoramic views of the mountain range.
For those with more experience, venturing on an expedition to reach the summit of one of the Seismiles is a possibility.

BONUS
Between Tinogasta and Fiambalá, on the RN 60, lies the famous "Adobe Route," a 55 km circuit passing through small villages with houses, ranches, chapels, and churches entirely constructed from adobe, a mixture of mud and straw used in ancient constructions.
