The role of the Russian Navy in the invasion of Ukraine has started to emerge. The Navy appears to have four missions:
Supporting the land campaign from the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov,???
Countering the much smaller Ukrainian Navy;
Sealing all shipping movement into and out of the Sea of Asov; and
Shadowing NATO Forces in the Mediterranean Sea.

At least six Russian amphibious assault ships from the Baltic and North fleets and a Kilo-class submarine have transited through the Mediterranean since the beginning of February and there are now amphibious groups in both the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov.? ?On the Black Sea, the Ukrainian naval port of Ochakiv as well as Odessa were attacked by sea and air on Thursday morning. It is possible also that some of the missile strikes may have come from Russian naval ships and submarines deployed in both seas, with potential for an amphibious operation launched out of Crimea to isolate the naval port of Odessa in support of a land offensive.? The amphibious group in the Sea of Azov appears to be supporting operations in the eastern Ukrainian provinces, particularly on the port of Mariupol.
All merchant shipping has been stopped from passing through the Kerch Strait. In addition Ukraine has stopped all merchant shipping traffic. This may effect global grain supplies.
The US Navy are reporting that there are three Slava cruisers deployed in the Black Sea, the Aegean Sea and the Sea of Azov. These ships appear to be positioned to counter the build up of US, NATO and allied navies in the Mediterranean Sea. As an indication of how long-planned the invasion was, in addition to the Black Sea Fleet Moskva, two of these ships have been repositioned from Northern Fleet, Marshal Ustinov and the Pacific Fleet Varyag.
