• PHCs are the cornerstone of India’s rural healthcare system, providing primary care to a population of 30,000 in rural areas and 20,000 in hilly, tribal, and desert areas.

Key Developments Under the National Health Mission (NHM):

1. 24x7 Operational PHCs: As of March 2024, 12,348 PHCs and 3,133 FRUs have been made operational 24x7 to handle emergency cases effectively. This initiative ensures timely medical intervention, which is critical in emergencies like snakebites, maternal health complications, or other urgent medical needs.
2. Mobile Medical Units (MMUs): 1,424 MMUs are now operational, providing healthcare access to the most remote and underserved areas.
3. Increased Human Resources: NHM has facilitated the addition of 2.69 lakh healthcare workers across various categories, including general duty medical officers, specialists, nurses, AYUSH doctors, and allied healthcare professionals.
