RunThrough’s Inaugural Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon, presented by Nuun Celebrates Success as Runners Conquer Iconic Landmarks

Newcastle, UK: RunThrough , the UK’s largest and Europe’s fastest-growing running events company, is thrilled to announce the resounding success of the first-ever Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon , presented by Nuun , which saw 2000 participants. Held in collaboration with Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club , and with Children North East as the event’s Charity of the Year, this premier marathon event showcased the vibrant spirit of the North East as participants traversed through iconic landmarks and supported local charitable initiatives.?

Runners embarked on a journey through the heart of Gateshead and into Newcastle, passing renowned landmarks like the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and The Glasshouse. The road-closed courses provided a safe and scenic route, culminating in the historic Gateshead International Stadium, where runners crossed the finish line amidst cheers of support.

Chris Parr, Race Director at RunThrough, expressed his delight at the event's success: "We are thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm we witnessed at the inaugural Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon. Partnering with Gateshead Harriers Athletics Club added a special significance to this event, and we are grateful for the support of the local community."

In addition to the marathon, participants had the option to compete in a 10k and half marathon, ensuring there was a race suitable for runners of all abilities. This inclusive approach reflects RunThrough's commitment to promoting fitness and community engagement through running.

Local government officials echoed their support for the event, with Councillor Angela Douglas, Cabinet Member for Culture, Sport and Leisure at Gateshead Council, commenting, “We were very pleased to host the Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon, and see so many runners on the roads, and family and friends supporting. It’s such a beautiful, scenic route and shows off Gateshead at its best. Congratulations to everyone who took part.”

Councillor Alex Hay, Cabinet member for a Thriving City at Newcastle City Council, said: “Congratulations to all the runners who took part in the Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon. The atmosphere was amazing and the event created so many magical memories for the runners and spectators. As a city, we pride ourselves on hosting world-class sporting events and we can’t wait to welcome people back for next year’s event.”

As the curtains close on the inaugural Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon, RunThrough looks forward to continuing its mission of delivering exceptional race experiences and fostering a culture of fitness and camaraderie within the running community. The Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon will return in May 2025, entry is now open here . RunThrough will organise and deliver 240 events in 2024 with over a quarter of a million participants, including the Morpeth 10k , taking place on June 2nd and the Newcastle Half Marathon and 10k at Kingston Park in July.
