?? Running Solo Without Running Aground: 5 Lessons from a Solopreneur Survivor

"If you want to run fast, run alone. If you want to run far, run together."

In 2014, I embarked on my first solopreneurship journey—and ran myself off a cliff.

Despite 11 years of experience running a small business, transitioning to solopreneurship proved challenging.

With a newly co-authored career guide book, I ventured into career coaching.

However, without a support team, I found myself juggling everything from bookkeeping to marketing single-handedly.

This was a decade before ChatGPT, so tech assistance for drafting proposals or speeding up email responses wasn't an option.

Financial struggles added mental weight, constantly distracting me from business focus.

That's why it was refreshing to attend Su-Yen Wong 黄素燕 's event, "Me, Myself & My Vision: A Solo Strategy."

The room buzzed with like-minded individuals—from seasoned entrepreneurs to those just discovering the potential of a portfolio career.

I shared my journey, chronicled in my latest book "No More Bosses - The Journey to Sustainable Self-Employment," delving into aspects that didn't make it into print.

The audience's response was heartening, especially from those in similar positions to where I once stood.

For those who couldn't attend, here are key takeaways:

  1. Financial Runway: Starting with zero (or negative) capital in 2014 hindered my progress. A financial buffer allows for inevitable mistakes and focuses on long-term success rather than quick gains.
  2. Identify Your Superpower: Overcoming my blind spots, I learned to lean on others' observations. Discovering marketing as my superpower, combined with 20 years of HR marketing experience, helped me uncover my niche and become a category leader.
  3. Supportive Environment: This fulfilling journey isn't easy. Secure support early on, perhaps by setting a timeline to ease concerns of those around you.
  4. Leverage Support: Solopreneurship doesn't mean doing everything alone. Utilize interns, freelancers, and tools like ChatGPT to focus on your highest-value work.
  5. Network: Form a mastermind group for accountability and shared learning. Having peers to vent to can be therapeutic.

In the end, solopreneurship isn't about sprinting to the finish line—it's about finding your stride, pacing yourself, and enjoying the journey.

So tie those laces tight, join the pack of like-minded runners, and remember: in this race, crossing the finish line is just the beginning of your next great adventure.
