Running with the Pack: Leadership Lessons for Unstoppable Teams

In my years of working with both dogs and people, I’ve discovered something surprising: corporate teams and dog packs have more in common than you might think. Sure, one group might chase after deadlines instead of squirrels, but when it comes to what makes them successful, the parallels are uncanny. Just like a pack of dogs, a team thrives when each member understands their role and contributes their unique strengths. After all, whether you’re leading a project or herding sheep, it’s not the size of the dog in the fight—it’s the way the pack works together that counts.

Leading from the Front: Visionaries, Builders, and the Heartbeat of the Pack

Picture a pack of dogs trotting through the park, guided by a leader who moves with calm, steady confidence. This front-of-the-pack dog doesn’t need to bark orders; their very presence sets the pace and direction for the group. In your team, who plays this role? Who are the Transformational Leaders—those who inspire with their vision, who see the path ahead and lead with a sense of purpose that others naturally align with?

But even the most visionary leader needs others who can bring their ideas to life. Just as the lead dog in the pack relies on others to execute the hunt (or perhaps fetch the ball), Implementers in a team take visionary ideas and turn them into reality. They are the ones who translate strategy into action, building the path that the leader envisions. Together, the visionary and the implementer create the heartbeat of the team, much like the leading dogs in a pack ensure that the group not only survives but thrives.

So, take a moment to reflect: Are your visionaries and implementers working in sync, leading the pack with a shared sense of purpose? Or is something holding them back, preventing the team from moving forward as one?

Balancing the Pack: Bridge-Builders, Servants, and Guardians of Harmony

In a dog pack, the middle ranks are critical for holding the group together. These dogs might not lead the charge, but they play an essential role in maintaining balance and unity within the pack. Similarly, in a corporate team, Democratic Leaders and Servant Leaders excel in fostering collaboration, ensuring that every team member’s voice is heard—just like the middle-of-the-pack dogs who ensure no one is left behind, even if they do occasionally stop to sniff a tree.

These middle-of-the-pack members are the glue that holds the team together. Unity, however, needs direction, and that’s where Coordinators come in. Much like a dog in the middle of the pack that ensures everyone is moving in the right direction, coordinators align efforts and bring people together, ensuring that the team’s actions are cohesive. Coaching Leaders also thrive in this space, guiding and mentoring team members, helping them grow into their roles, and ensuring the future strength of the pack.

Look at your team: Who are your bridge-builders and guardians of harmony? Are they empowered to keep the team unified, or are they struggling to maintain balance amidst the chaos?

Supporting from Behind: Watchful Eyes, Finishers, and Masters of Their Craft

At the back of the pack are the dogs that watch over the group, ensuring its safety and stability. These aren’t the weakest members—they are the most vigilant, always alert to potential threats and ensuring that the pack’s progress is steady and secure. In your team, these roles are filled by Laissez-Faire Leaders and Observational Leaders—those who support from the shadows, trusting others to take the lead while they provide a strong foundation.

Behind every successful project, you’ll find Completer-Finishers—the detail-oriented team members who ensure that nothing is left to chance, polishing the work and ensuring the team’s output is flawless. They’re like the dogs at the back of the pack that ensure everything is in order. Alongside them are the Specialists, the masters of their craft, who bring deep expertise to solve complex problems and provide insights that others might miss. They operate quietly but effectively, just as the vigilant dogs at the back ensure the pack’s success from behind the scenes.

However, not everyone who finds themselves at the back is there by choice. Some may have been pushed into this role due to a lack of confidence or unresolved issues, leading them to adopt a more controlling approach when thrust into leadership. These are the Autocratic Leaders—those who lead through control rather than inspiration, much like a dog forced into an unnatural leadership position. Their presence can disrupt the pack, leading to tension and disengagement.

So, who in your team is quietly ensuring the team’s success from behind the scenes? Are they being recognized for their contributions, or are they struggling under the weight of expectations they weren’t meant to carry?

Unleashing Your Team’s Potential

The true strength of a team, like that of a dog pack, lies not in the power of one but in the harmony of many. When each member knows their role—when the visionaries are leading, the builders are creating, the bridge-builders are uniting, and the watchers are securing—the team moves as one, unstoppable and sure.

Take a moment to reflect on your team. Are your leaders truly leading? Are your bridge-builders maintaining harmony? Are your specialists and finishers allowed to shine? By understanding and honoring these roles, you can unleash your team’s full potential, creating an environment where every member thrives, and the pack—your team—achieves greatness.
