Running a Marathon: A Test of Character

This coming Sunday I will be running in the London Marathon for the second time. 26.2 miles is an intimidating distance and I can assure anyone who hasn’t done it that it is every bit as tough as you would expect.
Race day is the culmination of 24 weeks of specific training - when no one is watching. Marathon training is in many ways the biggest test of character, given you do it throughout the winter months and face setbacks along the way. Leadership character is similar in my experience; it is revealed when you are tested, and often when no one is looking.
Why are you running a marathon? This is the question I get asked most. I confess there are times during the training when I wonder!
The truth is I run because I feel truly aligned when I run. Physically, mentally and emotionally. If that makes no sense I urge you to consider a personal challenge that allows you a sense of purpose, a chance to ‘play’ and extends your potential. According to Simon Bray of Vega Factor, the science is clear – people perform best when they feel the strongest sense of play, purpose & potential.
Play, purpose and potential; these are the three big drivers of intrinsic motivation.
And as the saying goes, if it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.
Here’s a link to a blog I wrote about conviction, courage and leadership - and a link to my Virgin Giving page. I am grateful for any donations which will go to support Barnardo’s and the fantastic work they do for children at Meadows School in Tunbridge Wells, where I live.
And of course, good luck to all my fellow runners on Sunday!
