On November 2–3, 2024, Samarkand hosted the 6th International “Samarkand Marathon”, gathering over five thousand participants from 43 countries worldwide. Organized by the Art and Culture Development Foundation of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the marathon not only highlighted the importance of a healthy lifestyle but also raised awareness about inclusivity. Participants raced distances from 2 to 42 kilometers along scenic routes through ancient Samarkand, offering breathtaking views of the city’s historical monuments and cultural landmarks.
For the third consecutive year, the SIUT team took an active part in this charity marathon, showcasing the university’s commitment to sports and social responsibility. The SIUT team, along with members of the SIUT IRBIS sports club, competed in the 2, 5, and 10-kilometer races.
“Samarkand Marathon is not just a run; it is a cultural exchange that strengthens friendly ties between nations. Such charity initiatives promote physical activity and unite people,” noted Shirin Noekhah from Iran, a professor of the "Computer Science" Department.
Alisher Igamberdiev, head of the SIUT IRBIS sports club, emphasized that the university’s participation in the marathon serves as an inspiring example for youth, encouraging an active and socially responsible lifestyle. “Such international events bring us closer together and foster global solidarity,” he added.
The marathon is becoming a cherished tradition, underscoring Samarkand’s role as a center where the past and present, sports and art, culture, and friendship converge.
For reference: The “Samarkand Marathon” is an international charity run established in 2019. Alongside the sporting activities, Samarkand hosts educational and cultural programs within the “Samarkand Marathon” framework, including charity concerts and film screenings. The event is part of a series of charity runs that aim to raise public awareness about inclusivity in cultural and art spaces, promote a healthy lifestyle, and foster the development of sports tourism in Uzbekistan.
