Running and Business

Running and Business

I never thought I’d ever call myself a ‘Runner’, I was a fat lad at school and I never dreamed I’d be a ‘Business Owner’ because I was far too creative to wear a suit.??

Fast forward more years than I care to remember and those two things occupy most of my waking day.? I’m constantly planning, strategizing and worrying, sometimes I do those even when I’m asleep!??

I’ve been in business for more years than I have been running, entering my first-ever race in 2017, the well-loved GNR.? So it’s only relatively recently that I’ve come to realise that running and business are very similar.

??It goes without saying that both require commitment and hard work. You're going to need discipline and dedication to get you through the difficult times! But when everything does fall into place there is no greater feeling of accomplishment.

??There’s a lot of competition out there, everyone’s jostling to prove they are the best and once you’ve proven yourself there’s going to be someone who thinks they can do better. You’ll want to prove them wrong.

????♂? Inevitably you’re going to face adversity or find yourself in a situation that tests you to breaking point. Adapting to changing conditions is essential for success in both running and business.

?? Understandably they are both very goal-oriented, even if it's just a lifestyle choice you’ve made, you’ll still be working towards specific objectives and identifying milestones you’ll need to reach along the way.

I’ve learned that anyone can run and anyone can set up a business. Still, if you want to be successful at either you need to be disciplined, competitive, adaptable and set goals, even ridiculous ones.

I’ll end the comparisons between running and business there because I’d like to finish off by pointing out that running, unlike business, can help reduce stress. To my knowledge, I don't think being in business has ever reduced anyone's stress levels.

There's nothing better for reducing my stress levels and improving my mental wellbeing than running outside in my favourite green space. It helps clear my mind, gives the body a natural boost of endorphins and generally prepares me for the working week ahead.? It's also good training for the next Ultramarathon that I said I’d never enter.
