Running a Business While Caring for an Elderly Parent
Working from home sounds ideal—until you’re also responsible for an aging parent. My 97-year-old mother lives with me. She’s still sharp, still loves to cook (even though she can’t quite see over the stove), and keeps me entertained with her one-liners. But she also needs help, and I need to work.
For a while, I tried to do it all—running my business while keeping an eye on her. It wasn’t sustainable.
There were too many interruptions, like the time she spent 15 minutes loudly searching for a spoon while I was in a client session. By the time she found it, my focus was shot.
Now, I have a caregiver come in while I work. It’s been a game-changer. My mom gets companionship and support, and I get peace of mind and uninterrupted time to focus. It’s made all the difference.
Here’s what I’ve learned:
If you’re caring for a parent while working, what’s helped you manage? I’d love to hear what’s working (or what’s not). Let’s talk about it.

2 周Well said Susan, I also use a personal aide. I cherish the time as I dig into my home based coaching business. My mom's care is major value. I eat my meals but being able to walk away is priceless.
