The Run for Hope race took place on Sunday, 8 September 2019 and I am delighted to announce that members of team Defy participated! Defy’s sister company, Grundig, also collaborated with the Four Seasons Hotel to help raise funds for cancer research and children with cancer through their annual Run for Hope event.
Run for Hope was inspired by the story of Canadian athlete, Terry Fox, who lost his leg to cancer in 1980. Despite this, he forged ahead on his ‘Marathon of Hope’ – his attempt to run across the length of Canada. Unfortunately, Terry was hospitalised and could not complete his trek but his perseverance, endurance, and courage inspired Isadore Sharpe, the founder of the Four Seasons to begin the annual race in his honour.
Over the past 2 decades, the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts have globally raised over a billion rand towards cancer research. This year, the South African leg of the race will use the funds raised to support the Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC) and Kids Kicking Cancer. This charity run takes place in over 60 countries and with millions of participants, has become the largest one-day cancer research fundraiser. It was uplifting to know that Defy employees participated in and supported such a noble cause, and I am proud of everyone for doing their part.
