Run Hard
Last week the world watched as the Olympic Cauldron was drenched and its symbolic competitive fire extinguished until we meet again. As the games drew to a close, Track and Field took center stage and the four-person relay races ringed the perimeter.
The dynamics of the relay are unique in that not only does each individual have to do his or her best running their leg but there is that awkward, uncertain moment where the runners run together and attempt to pass the baton without breaking stride. Each runner has to run their best and hand off the baton successfully for the team to have a chance to win.
As I pass my baton to the fourth generation of the Roberts' clan here in America I am pleased with our split time. My Grandfathers toiled in Coal mines and factories as the first leg of our relay was run. My Father had to put himself through college on the GI Bill after serving in "The Big One". When given the Baton and a chance to run, I couldn't wait.
As I stretch to hand the baton to the next generation, I see the strength and confidence I saw in myself. As they impatiently wait for the old man to hand it over, I see the fire of determination in their eyes.
I know now that their chances of winning are greater because of the Coal Miner and the Factory Worker who ran hard every day to set us all up. My Father's willingness to work and pursue his degree at night gave me a jump on the next guy. No one behind me dropped the baton and I will not either.
The American Dream is still alive. Whether you are first to run or the last, your contribution sets the pace for the whole team. If you were given an advantage like I was, you have a responsibility to protect it. If there is ground to make up, get to it.
It's the only race we'll ever run that really matters.
