It started with a whisper.
The Monday morning air in the Golden Pacific office buzzed with the usual chatter as employees filed in, clutching their morning coffees and exchanging pleasantries. But today, a rumour danced through the office like wildfire.
“Have you heard?” Ama from HR leaned in close to Kwesi, her voice dropping to a dramatic whisper. “Mr. Mensah might be leaving! He got a better offer.”
Kwesi’s eyes widened. “Mr. Mensah? Our Managing Director? I can’t imagine this place without him.”
By lunchtime, the whisper had spread to every office corner, mutating with each retelling. In Marketing, it was rumoured that Mr. Mensah was starting his own consulting firm. By the time it reached Accounting, Mr. Mensah was apparently moving to the States to join a tech giant.
Afia, who’d recently joined Golden Pacific as a communications officer, overheard the talk in the break room. “Is it true?” she asked, looking around as her colleagues discussed the rumour with feverish interest.
“Well, I heard from a reliable source,” said Selasi, eyes darting around as if Mr. Mensah might appear any moment. “He hasn’t said anything to us yet, but we all know he’s been meeting with investors.”
Afia decided to play detective. She had seen Mr. Mensah in the corridor that morning, chatting casually with his assistant. Could he really be leaving? It didn’t seem likely, but the excitement of “insider information” was too tempting to resist.
By Wednesday, the rumour had taken on a life of its own. Someone mentioned that Mr. Mensah’s office was unusually clean, a telltale sign of an imminent departure. Others swore they saw him handing out business cards to strangers during a coffee break.
Meanwhile, the man at the centre of it all remained blissfully unaware. Mr. Mensah continued with his usual routines, meeting with clients, discussing quarterly reports, and cracking his usual jokes with the team. Yet, the hushed conversations followed him like a shadow.
Afia found herself swept up in the tide. “Imagine if he really does leave!” she exclaimed to Esi, her desk neighbour. “Things would change around here. Maybe we’d get a new boss from one of those fancy firms in Accra.”
Esi smirked. “Or maybe we’d be stuck with someone who doesn’t even know our names. It’s a gamble, honestly.”
That Friday, as the week was winding down, an email popped into everyone’s inbox with a subject line in bold: "Team Meeting – 4 PM in the Conference Room."
Afia’s heart raced. The email had come directly from Mr. Mensah himself. Was he finally going to announce his departure? She glanced around; her colleagues seemed to be thinking the same thing. Their collective nervousness hung in the air, and when the clock struck four, they filed into the conference room, bracing for the news.
With his signature warm smile, Mr. Mensah strode in, looking more jovial than ever. He cleared his throat, and silence fell.
“Good afternoon, everyone! I wanted to bring us together to discuss an exciting new project. I’ll need you on board to help make it a success.”
The team exchanged confused glances.?
This wasn’t a farewell speech.
Mr. Mensah continued, “We’re partnering with a prominent NGO to launch a youth employment initiative across Ghana. It will be a game-changer for our company and, I hope, for each of you professionally. I’m excited for what’s ahead!”
As Mr. Mensah spoke about the project, Afia felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. She’d been part of the gossip, allowing herself to speculate without a shred of evidence. When he finished, there was applause, but Afia noticed the guilty smiles and a few sheepish looks exchanged among her colleagues.
As the crowd filed out of the room, Mr. Mensah called, “Oh, and one more thing. I plan to be here for a long time, so I hope none of you were planning on replacing me!”?
He winked, and a ripple of laughter went through the team, with their shoulders relaxing.
