Mike Gawinski explains that arching theory enables hopper feeder designers to ignore much of the weight contained within a hopper while focusing on material contained within the parabolically shaped “active volume” of material to be removed through the hopper bottom opening.
He explains how a parabolic shape may be conservatively approximated by a rectangular prism and how to convert the weight of material within the prism into a cutting force parallel to the direction of belt travel. He illustrates how to do that with an example, showing how to convert the hopper drag into required drive power.
He demonstrates how to automatically perform these calculations using the Rulmeca hopper feeder drive calculation program, available on the company’s website.
