No Rules Rules - Summary
Recently, I read the book 'No Rules Rules' by Reed Hastings(Founder/CEO - Netflix) and Erin Meyer.
It's a significant book on organisation culture building - especially important for HR leaders and founders who are thinking about how to build organisation culture. You may or may not follow all of what netflix does, but the book will surely give you direction to think.
Below, I have given basic summary of chapters from my notes. If you want to understand real essence, I will recommend to read the book.
Here are nine dots the writers have covered:
The First Dot — Build up talent density
Hire and keep most talented employees and pay them best salary in market.
The Second Dot — Give & receive candid feedbacks with 4A guideline
While giving feedback:
Aim to assist.
Feedback needs to be actionable.
While receiving feedback:
Don’t be defensive. Instead, be appreciative.
Accept or discard.
The Third Dot — Remove control policies
Remove most policies such as vacation policy, spending policy. Rather give employees guidelines.

The Fourth Dot — Pay employees more than market standards
If you’re paying them better than market standards, they won't leave you.
The Fifth Dot — Open the Books
By opening books you’ve shown them that you trust them, which in turn generates feeling of ownership, commitment, and responsibility.
The Sixth Dot — No decision-making approvals required
Let employees be independent decision makers. After all they are expert in their domain.
The Seventh Dot — Keeper Test
Ask yourself - If a person on your team were to quit tomorrow, would you try to change his mind? If no, then let him go and you find someone better.
A company is like a sports team not family.
The Eighth dot - A Circle of feedback
Live events where people give honest feedback to each other. This makes people more accountable for their action.
The Ninth Dot — Lead With Context, Not Control
If you have created an organisation with high talent density, you don't need to control employees' actions. Give set right context and let them do their job.
