The Rule of Reactive Cost

The Rule of Reactive Cost

When I started to value myself more, I naturally began to value my energy and time more. I put a stop to allowing these precious resources to be drained on situations or people that aren't worth it. I call this rule for myself, the rule of "Reactive Cost."

Here's an example of the "Reactive Cost" rule in action:

This past weekend, I took two visiting friends to breakfast at my favorite local cafe. But, my friends are vegan, and unfortunately this cafe didn't offer many vegan options. So we walked across the way to a nearby vegan place first so my friends could get food to bring with them.

When we got to the cafe, the owner angrily approached our table mid-meal and said my friends couldn't eat there because they had bought food elsewhere. Keep in mind, I'm one of this cafe's top customers.

In that moment, I had to make a choice, but before I did I asked myself, "What would be the reactive cost?"

  • I may say some mean things and hurt this woman's feelings.
  • I may make my friends uncomfortable.
  • I may waste my energy.
  • I may waste my time.

And the most costly of all: I could destroy a good vibe and rob from the focus of enjoying the pure moment with friends that are only visiting for 2 days.

So I took a breath, let it go, and decided to speak with her privately later. Valuing my time and energy meant not depleting it on an unproductive outburst driven from emotion.

When you treasure your energy, you ask yourself before reacting - what is the reactive cost? Is the cost of my reaction worth it? Usually the answer is no.

If you don't value your energy, you'll drain it responding to everything that bothers you, and you'll have nothing left for pursuing your dreams.

Don't let the small stuff steal your time and power.

Treasure your energy because it is your greatest treasure.

Sincerely,

Shanee Moret

I needed this right now Shanee. My mom is in palliative care dying of colon cancer, and my nerves seem to be raw as I carry a lifetime of good and bad feelings with me that I can't discuss with her (she was my best friend) because she has dementia and doesn't remember me most of the time. I have been told that I'm handling it rather well when she gets angry at me (nobody else but me), but it's taking a toll on my psyche.

It is against the health code to allow outside food into an establishment. You would be surprised at how many people try to bring in outside food even when the restaurant does offer selections for dietary restrictions. I've even seen people try and bring in outside liquor which is its own complete set of problems. However, there is definitely a way to uphold rules while prioritizing client/customer satisfaction- an art we could all learn to master. The fact that you allowed the moment to pass and enjoyed the time with friends was the right move but the fact that you still addressed it at a later time also shows character. Too many people would just walk away and write them off. Bringing it to their attention (at a calmer time) that they could have handled the situation better allows them to improve for the future, not just for you but for others who would be more "reactive" and less patient.

Shanee, I love this article—something to consider in my life. I can certainly think of a few "Reactive Cost" moments I've had. LOL, Thanks again for all your wise and inspiring words.
