The Rule-Bender’s Hypothesis [to triple your impact]
Yes, there is intense disorder in our society right now. [Better is coming].
“Chaos gives birth to dancing stars,” Friedrich Nietzsche taught us sagely.
And kindly remember that all deep uncertainty brings with it [for those with the eyes to see it] a glorious opportunity to grow your creativity massively.
If you wish to use this time to mine your genius and discover ideas that will raise your craft, enthusiasm and impact, then keep reading...
...So...
...when it comes to dreaming up new works, please know that worrying too much about logistics keeps you stuck in logic [a place of great limitation versus creative inspiration and flights of your unbridled genius].
...and obsessing with perfection is the enemy of creativity. Along with the finest way to never ship any astoundingly good work.
...caring too much about what people you trust think about the project that is flooding you with energy as you make it is an awesome way to ensure you do nothing that matters.
I guess what I’m suggesting to you is that artistry and genuine ingenuity demands that you step into your rebel nature.
And that you renew your relationship with your inner disruptor...
...while you raise your freak flag on the pirate boat that you’re meant to captain.
Become a revolutionary. Quickly.
Bend the rules that the traditions of your trade taught you were the price of admission. Split from the crowd. Stray from the herd.
Be not average. Ever. Please.
When I think of creative superstars, Salvador Dali and Philippe Starck and William Shakespeare and Stephen King rise in my mind.
When I consider bravely inventive heroes and industry missionaries I remember...
...that Miles Davis copied his heroes until he developed the chops [and even more essentially, the confidence] to run his own race and create his own original style as a trumpet player.
...the Alexander McQueen fashion show where a supermodel walked down the runway until—at the middle—she was astonishingly sprayed by a series of paint machines that created a mesmerizing design on her dress. The audience roared thunderous applause. And the dress is now legendary.
...“The Physical Impossibility of Death in The Mind of Someone Living”, that staggeringly fascinating masterwork of English artist Damien Hirst that displays a violent tiger shark that was killed and then suspended in a tank of formaldehyde. I read that the creature was caught off the coast of Queensland, Australia by a fisherman who was paid to do so. His only instructions were to catch a shark “big enough to eat you.”
All true artistry—work that wows the world and gives you and I the permission to become the creative outlaws we secretly long to be—starts with a dysfunctional perception of reality.
Yes. Dysfunctional.
...to present your genius you absolutely need to see the possibilities that exist on the other side of what everyone around you says is normal.
...to rock your game and make your mark you really must commit to honoring your eccentricity and steadfastly taking down the traditions that good teachers taught you.
...to reveal your creative glory it becomes a necessity to rebel against the status quo, operate in another orbit and bend the rules that existed before you entered the field to your own weird, brilliant and wonderful vision of a vastly better reality.
Makes me think of the words I read after I visited Dali’s house in a small fishing village while on a speaking tour in Spain:
“I do not understand why, when I ask for grilled lobster in a restaurant, I’m never served a cooked telephone.”
Ok, hope that last line made you smile.
