Rule #15: Growth Requires Reflection

Rule #15: Growth Requires Reflection

This week?I interviewed?Francoise Brougher, the former COO of Pinterest who won a $22.5 million sexual discrimination lawsuit against the company.?

We talk about the Pinterest suit, but Francoise has so much more wisdom to share about an incredible career that led her to Pinterest. At one point she went from managing 50 people at Google to 1,800 overnight!

One of the key lessons I took away from Francoise was the power of reflection. It reminded me of the John Dewey quote: "We do not learn from experience...we learn from reflecting on experience."

Specifically, Francoise introduced the idea of a travel log for leaders. I've never heard of this concept before and have been obsessed with it ever since!

It made me think of Amazon's requirement that all presentations at senior meetings be done in memo format. There's something really powerful about writing out your thoughts in complete sentences, forcing reflection and clarity about your experience, and then conveying it to your peers.

This is not the first time I've heard about the importance of communicating what you're learning and observing, but it's the first time one of our guests has talked about doing it from a senior position.

I'd love to know how travel logs have helped you in your career by:

  • Clarifying your thinking
  • Communicating your observations to your team
  • Learning from your experience

I look forward to a new episode of The Growth League Podcast each week, and this week’s didn’t disappoint. I “know” I need to debrief with myself and reflect from a point of genuine curiosity (thank you for The Curiosity Muscle, Diana Kander), as if I’m asking another person questions. But most days, I LET myself become too wrapped up in just keeping the work flowing, and I don’t deeply absorb what I heard, read, saw, and intuited. I love Francoise’s trip story approach. I think that will work for daily reflection, too. I’m going to borrow this tool!
