Rule #12: Recover With Flair

Rule #12: Recover With Flair

“Recover With Flair” is my new favorite mantra, thanks to?this week's Growth League guest, Sunayna Tuteja, the first ever Chief Innovation Officer at the Federal Reserve System.

I think I've been obsessed with failure and, more importantly, learning from it for as long as I can remember. For instance, I just found?this?2012 interview series I did for the Kauffman Foundation on Learning from Failure.?

But “Recover With Flair” means much more than learning from the failure. It means "Make It Right!" It means "Turn it into something even more special!" It means "See the setback as an opportunity!"

I used to be a server at a fancy restaurant that made you replace the word “problem” with “opportunity.” That tiny shift in language really does something powerful to your brain. I distinctly remember a time when I came to my boss and said, "We have a big opportunity, I just spilled a bowl of soup on one of our guests." But I'll be darned if we didn't comp their meal, give them a gift card to come back and offer to do their dry-cleaning for the clothes I got dirty. That's recovering with flare!

The words we use matter.

A study published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology by Harvard Business School professor, Dr. Alison Wood Brooks, documented the power of replacing "I am anxious" with "I am excited" in three separate studies. Participants were divided into two groups and told to say to themselves either "I am anxious" or "I am excited" before a difficult task. Those who were "excited" performed better and were more likely to view the challenge before them as an opportunity.

THE WORDS WE USE to talk to ourselves MATTER.

That's why I'm adding “Recover With Flair” to my mantras. Listen to the full episode of The Growth League with Sunayna?here.

And let me know some powerful phrases you've come to use!

Embed it all across the organization and eliminate performance "appraisals" or whatever the current label is for them. They serve to institutionalize mistakes and create a written artifact to that effect. Eliminate them with Flair!
