Rugby Portobello Trust, nurturing Young People's creative power

This week I had the opportunity to attend the Rugby Portobello Trust's Youth Club exhibition.

When I enter the venue, I don't know exactly what to expect. I’m a little early, hope I’ll have the time to talk to Sophie Fitzhugh, the Trust's Head of Services, instead I meet a young girl who kindly gives me a tour of the premises. We enter the Youth Club, where is the main exhibition with photographs of different young artists. The images tell many powerful stories, from Grenfell Tower to Covid-19, Black Lives Matter protests, empty basketball halls, a black and white Halloween pumpkin left alone in a corner.?One wall is covered in framed writing, the result of one of the many activities run by the Trust.

The next place we visit is the kitchen, where I meet Michael, senior worker and extraordinaire baker... Later in the evening, I am lucky enough to taste a cake baked by the girls under Michael's expert tutelage, really delicious!

Michael tells me about two projects: #ManCave and #Athena, both programmes support those aged between 10 and 19, helping them to identify and communicate their feelings and emotions. The Athena project is designed to give girls and young women a safe space to build their confidence and get advice and information, trying out new activities and making friends. The ManCave provides them with a sounding board for issues of concern and a forum to support each other in the difficult transition from childhood to adulthood, helping them to identify what it means to be a man in modern society.

Now it's showtime! Spoken word, film, music, a celebration of creativity and talent is the result of the Amplify programme, a safe haven for young people to develop their strengths and cultivate their passions. Some of the young people are rewarded for their merits, among them, the young girl I met on arrival.

Questa settimana ho avuto l'opportunità di visitare la mostra dei giovani talenti del Rugby Portobello Trust. Quando entro nella sede, non so esattamente cosa aspettarmi. Sono un po' in anticipo, spero di avere il tempo di parlare con Sophie Fitzhugh, responsabile dei servizi del Trust, invece incontro una giovane ragazza che gentilmente mi fa fare un giro dei locali. Entriamo nella Youth Club, dove si trova la mostra principale con le fotografie di diversi giovani artisti. Le immagini raccontano molte storie forti, dalla Grenfell Tower alla Pandemia, le proteste di Black Lives Matter, le sale da basket vuote, una zucca di Halloween in bianco e nero lasciata sola in un angolo.?Una parete è ricoperta di scritte incorniciate, risultato di una delle tante attività gestite dal Trust. Il luogo successivo che visitiamo è la cucina, dove incontro Michael, lavoratore senior e straordinario chef... Più tardi, in serata, ho la fortuna di assaggiare una torta preparata dalle ragazze sotto la guida esperta di Michael, davvero deliziosa! Michael mi parla di due progetti: #ManCave e #Athena, entrambi i programmi sostengono i giovani di età compresa tra i 10 e i 19 anni, aiutandoli a identificare e comunicare i loro sentimenti e le loro emozioni. Il progetto Athena è stato ideato per dare alle ragazze e alle giovani donne uno spazio sicuro per rafforzare la loro fiducia e ottenere consigli e informazioni, provando nuove attività e facendo amicizia. La ManCave offre loro una cassa di risonanza per le questioni che li preoccupano e un forum per sostenersi a vicenda nella difficile transizione dall'infanzia all'età adulta, aiutandoli a identificare cosa significa essere un uomo nella società moderna. Ora è il momento dello spettacolo! Poesia in musica, film, pop, una celebrazione della creatività e del talento è il risultato del programma Amplify, un rifugio sicuro per i giovani per sviluppare i loro punti di forza e coltivare le loro passioni. Alcuni dei giovani vengono premiati per i loro meriti, tra cui la ragazza che ho incontrato al mio arrivo. Un enorme GRAZIE a Sophie e al team per l'invito, auguro a tutti i ragazzi dello Youth Club di continuare la loro ricerca artistica e di coltivare il loro prezioso talento.
