History of the Ruby

Found in ancient India it was also called the “king's precious stones”. Used before in jewelry it was a symbol of power and energy. Some sources of these rich stones are found all over the world across different timelines. First found in Myanmar and then later found in late 20th century in Vietnam. Other producers of this birthstone include Afghanistan, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Mozambique etc.?

Treating the stone

To give it a clean and finishing glow we love to see in our jewelry the rubies are often heat treated to remove the purplish coloration giving rise to a vibrant red. How does it get its color?

Due to the trace presence of the element chromium it gives the ruby a red color. This can range from a deep rich red to a lighter rose shade red. The most precious ruby color is “pigeon-blood red” which depends on the amount of chromium present in it.

Rubies can also be assessed in a similar fashion to diamond- using the 4C’s. Color being the most important factor in this case. The darker the color the more precious and higher valued it is.
