TIPS FOR STARTING A NEW JOB!
Taking on a new job is daunting, whether you’re the Manager Director or a trainee, your first day is always both nerve racking and exciting. Your new manager will welcome you into the business with a comprehensive induction process to introduce you to their processes, procedures, policies, the wider team, and your specific responsibilities! You should take certain key actions throughout your first week to ensure you transition smoothly into your new position, below is several items to help settle your nerves and make a great impression on your new colleagues.
LEAVE YOUR EGO AT HOME!
Forget any pre-conceived ideas from your previous workplace and ensure that nothing will get in the way of your learning. If your new job sees you performing similar elements to that of your old job, never assume you’ll be completing tasks in the exact same way. This kind of mentality will only set you back, effecting your concentration and ability to comprehend new information.
GET ORGANISED, BE EARLY!
Make sure that you’re at least 15 minutes early to your first day and be well prepared, develop a list of questions the night before you start. Try to treat your first week at a new company as if you were still in the interview, it’s your chance to prove that your manager made the right choice! Arrive presentable, professional, and most importantly with a positive attitude. If you’re worried about being late to your first day, map out your route to work and practice your commute to ensure your more than prepared for potential traffic or public transport delays. Punctuality is essential – be on time to every meeting, training session or catch up so people know you’re serious about your new role.

INTRODUCE YOURSELF!
Seeking opportunities to introduce yourself to other colleagues without prompting from your manager can help display enthusiasm towards the company. It also demonstrates your eager to cultivate positive working relationships by making the first move. The more people you reach out to and establish a relationship with, the easier it will be to ask for help and get up to speed with the rest of the team. Be friendly, respectful, and open to offers of support. Greeting people by their name when conversing will not only help you remember but also build rapport with the person.
DON’T BE AFRAID TO ASK!
You may feel like a burden asking questions, but just remember, everyone expects it! You’re much better off asking a silly question than making a silly mistake. It shows interest and will allow you to learn more about your new role and company. Ensure you ask positively phrased questions that provide you with relevant information – but take notes and don’t ask the same thing repeatedly.
ASK FOR ONE-ON-ONE TIME WITH YOUR BOSS!
You should ask for a personal meeting with your boss within the first week to develop this critical relationship in a positive fashion. Find out what they expect of you, how they communicate and what their management style is – it will also give you the chance to explain your own preferred learning style too! Working out the qualities that your boss looks for in an employee will establish a strong relationship moving forward.
PREPARE FOR EVERY MEETING!
It’s almost guaranteed that your new employer will set you up with various meetings, trainings and catch ups throughout your first few weeks. You should prepare for all of these, no matter how relaxed, find out who you will be meeting with and what their position is. During these meetings, remember to ask for advice and suggestions, the person whose inducting you is doing so because they hold valued expertise – tap into their knowledge and get more acquainted, it’ll help you settle into the business.
PUT IN SOCIAL TIME!
We spend so much time at our workplace, and not all organisations will be highly social, but positive work friendships have several advantages. If you’re getting along well with a colleague, why not invite them for lunch or a coffee to become acquainted in a more relaxed setting. If you’re invited to social events, such as afterwork drinks or lunch with colleagues, take these valuable opportunities and show that you’re trying to become part of the team.
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR RECRUITER!
Your consultant will always be there for support and will want to be informed about how you’re progressing in your new position! If you come across any problems in your path, don’t be afraid to reach your consultant, they have so much experience and quality advice to offer – they’ll be more than happy to help.
STAY FOCUSED ON YOUR JOB DESCRIPTION!
Regularly review your job description or contract as you get up to speed, this will keep you focused on what’s most important. You can’t expect to make a massive difference in your first week, so don’t try to take on more than you can handle. Be respectful of the processes and how things are done before trying to implement major changes or a “better” alternative.
LOOK AFTER YOURSELF!
You’re going to feel overwhelmed and often exhausted by all the new information and ideas going on in your head. It is most important to look after your own mental health and wellbeing during this time. Get enough sleep every night, nourish your body, use your time off as down-time, socialize with friends and exercise regularly! All these things will help you to establish a healthy work-life balance with your new hours of work.
In your first few days you should be watching and listening far more than you are talking. When you start to observe and take things in, you’ll shortly find yourself aligning with the organisational culture. The most important thing is to enjoy your new job, embrace the change and show your new colleagues how much you enjoy being a part of their team!
