The product principle
Sodium hypochlorite generator is a device that uses diaphragm-less electrolysis to electrolyze low-concentration salt water to generate low-concentration sodium hypochlorite solution. The generation process of sodium hypochlorite includes electrolytic reaction and solution reaction. The diaphragm-less electrolytic cell is equipped with electrolytic anode and cathode, and the electrolyte (salt water) is filled between the two electrodes. In the low-concentration salt water as the electrolyte, the salt water is a strong electrolyte and exists in the form of ions.
There are four kinds of ions in the solution. When a direct current is applied between the two electrodes, the positive and negative ions will move directionally. Electrolysis will produce different electrode reactions on the two electrodes. The chlorine generated at the anode will undergo a hydrolysis reaction with the water in the solution to generate hypochlorous acid.
The hydrogen produced by the cathode will escape from the electrolytic cell. The remaining hydroxide and sodium combine to form NaOH, and the pH of the electrolyte near the cathode will increase. Since there is no diaphragm between the anode and the cathode, with the agitation of the electrolyte, the NaOH and HClO will undergo a neutralization reaction to generate NaClO.

The electrolysis reaction and the solution reaction are called the main reaction for the formation of sodium hypochlorite. However, because NaClO is not directly generated on the surface of the electrode, there are many side reactions in the actual work of the electrolytic cell. Especially when the electrolysis voltage is too high and there are too many impurities in the electrolyte, the side reactions will seriously affect the normal operation of the electrolytic cell and greatly reduce the current efficiency. The side reactions that occur on the cathode include Ca++, Mg, and Ba plasma which are reduced by electrons to form fouling.
