August Sizzle or August Slumber. You Decide!

In the Northern Hemisphere, August signals the last official day of summer.? Certainly, as the world records its hottest days on record, the physical temperature is not in question.??

I’m more intrigued by how we intellectually respond to these two words in a month that signals we are two-thirds finished with 2024.?

The dictionary defines sizzle as:?

Make a sound like burning fat ; seethe with deep anger or indignation; make a sizzling noise.?

In the United States, with only a few months left until the presidential election, many individuals are “seething”.? I decided to choose action over seething. It’s far more productive and lowers my temperature.?

I’m writing postcards to voters, attending informative meetings, and learning how to listen, understand and connect with different points of view. To paraphrase the poet Dylan Thomas, “I will not go gently into the good night.”?

Let’s consider ?the other? word: “slumber.” ?The dictionary defines slumber as:?

To sleep lightly; to lie dormant; to be in a torpid or negligent state.?

Contrasted with the heat of? “sizzle”, slumber seems a welcome respite.? One can’t sizzle endlessly without getting burned to a crisp.? We’ve all experienced individuals who never stop to take a breathe, who move so fast they miss much to see hear, and consider.? In crazy times like this, I believe it is wise to also slumber… to take care of oneself… to eat? right and sleep enough.?

Otherwise, we won’t make it to September.
