RTFM

RTFM

If you know what it means, you'll know that the original version is rude.  Too rude for LinkedIn and way too rude for a nice chap like me.  But it's funny.  Let's just say it could mean:

Read The Favoured Manual

My first experience of RTFM was with the wonderful guys who used to build my websites.  They are geniuses... the kind geniuses that work at strange hours of the day or night.  I like working at unusual times too.  So we 'connected'.

This was back in the day of MSN Messenger.  We'd 'chat' at all hours.  I asked a question - a technical question - after 11 pm one evening.  The answer came back, short, sharp, sweet.

"RTFM"

Since I was only just getting used to the likes of 'lol' and 'btw' - I was bemused.  Naively, I asked what it meant.

"Look it up..."

So I asked Auntie Google, and my relationship with the Tech Team Champions changed in an instant!

RTFM - Read The Favoured Manual

My point is not about the rude original version of the acronym.  My point is that the 'manual' is really often very good - especially the 'favoured' one - and by 'favoured one' I mean the one that Auntie Google or Uncle Amazon recommends.  By following this simple advice I've discovered what all the knobs on my camera actually do (and it's good).  I've also learned how to fly my iPhone - at least a bit better.

So whatever you're trying to achieve today, you can be brave and persevere in banging you head against the nearest door...

...or you can RTFM!
