RT#5 : Game Of Thrones and Power of Perception!
The biggest disappointment I have had in the recent past was when I watched the final season of Game Of Thrones (GOT). It was such a wonderful ride till 7th season, and when the most awaited final season was released, it ended up being a disaster. I would say, our huge expectation and the hype created around it just added to the disappointment.
But just think about it! Do you think the makers of the series did it intentionally? Do you think they wanted the final season to be a flop so that they can get bad reviews from all over the world? Do you think they wanted to be famous for screwing up such an amazing series, in the last season?
I think, they really believed in the plot they thought about to end the series. And they believed people would like it. Well, they assumed all of it! And on the other side, we expected something else!
Different people seeing things from different perspectives is very common in our workplace too. It could be as simple as the color theme for a simple mail, or it could also be as complex as a performance appraisal discussion between manager and team member. I have wondered why there is so much conflict between 2 individuals, why different people see things differently, what's right and what's wrong, does seniority have anything to do with who is right and who is wrong, and how do we agree to disagree?
Well, to be frank, I don't have the answer. There are a plethora of communication models available, however, just reading and understanding these models will barely help. We need to take a pause in those situations and try to understand where the other person is coming from. The same goes for the other person too. I strongly believe in the power of perception. Everyone is right in their own terms. Let's accept that and move on. So kill your ego!
