The trauma industrial complex - an interview with Darren McGarvey

Darren McGarvey – author of Poverty Safari and The Social Distance Between Us – began his new project, “The Trauma-Industrial Complex”, by delivering a Signature Lecture at the RSE last week.

The evening was an exploration of trauma and the notion of “lived experience” as the conversation about mental health has surged in recent years, especially on social media. Speaking after the event, Darren explained his thoughts on the importance of being aware of the tone of conversations about mental health online.

'Healthy Planet, Healthy People': community-led research projects announced

The RSE is pleased to announce 12 recipients of its new community-led research awards. Generously backed by the Williamson Trust, a total of £59,518 will be awarded to 12 community research projects located across Scotland.

The awards are designed to enable new and existing community-led research projects in any discipline that promote the health of individuals by fostering healthy communities, healthy environments, and healthy food.

RSE strengthens ties with the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan, through refreshed MoU signing

Signifying a joint aspiration to promote and strengthen scientific co-operation between Scotland and Taiwan, the RSE signed a refreshed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan (NSTC) on Friday 22 March 2024 in Taipei.

Signed by RSE Vice President, International, Professor Mona Siddiqui and Deputy Minister of NSTC, Dr Yi-Juang Chern, the agreement sets out the commitment to fund academic exchanges between the two countries through International Bilateral Visits, International Joint Projects, and joint activity to promote research of importance for the scholarly communities in Scotland and Taiwan.

Jazz-soaked philosophy in our catastrophic times with Cornel West

We're thrilled to welcome Professor Cornel West, distinguished American philosopher, theologian, activist, public intellectual, and presidential hopeful, to the RSE on Wednesday, 15 May. As part of the Gifford series, West considers the philosophical and artistic resources available to us to shape courageous, compassionate responses and find ways of moving forward in catastrophic times.

A dialogue on dying: examining assisted death in Scotland

There have been several attempts to legalise assisted dying across the UK. Applying its evidence-based approach and independence, the RSE will host a chaired public panel discussion on assisted dying, incorporating views from speakers on both sides of the issue. This event will provide a neutral space for an informed debate on the topic, incorporating various legal, ethical, medical, and religious perspectives.

How not to miss a productivity revival again

In the past decade and a half, we have been reliving the productivity paradox of the 1980s. Paraphrasing the late Nobel Prize Winner, Robert Solow:?“We see digital technology everywhere, except in the statistics”. The event will focus on the past, present, and future of productivity in Scotland and the UK.
