RSA Southampton - June 2024
A huge thank you to everyone who attended our 'Southampton Democracy' event in May. It was a fantastic turnout by Fellows and friends to discuss devolution and kick-start our programme. There's a short write up below.
The main focus of this update is our next three events - So here goes!
Thursday June 27th
EMPOWERED COMMUNITIES
1730-1930, Mettricks Woolston (Note change from original venue)
Southampton’s diverse communities and citizens have the energy and the knowledge to imagine a more prosperous, planet-positive future for our city. How do we capture these visions? And how do we act as change-makers, moving from vision to action to reality?
During this event, we will share our visions for Southampton. We will welcome change-makers who have breathed life into the city to share their stories. These include Board in the City, the SoCo Music Project and Southampton Climate Action Network.
As part of this we're collecting images that represent a thriving Southampton in 2050.
Submit a photo of something happening in Southampton, an idea from elsewhere, or an imagined concept to spark conversation and celebrate our community's potential. Share an image of your work or project that makes you proud.
Images can be sent to?Rebecca Kinge or via a LinkedIn message (Rebecca Kinge) or?Facebook (Rebecca Southampton), with all the appropriate credits embedded within the image. The images will be printed and shared at the RSA Southampton event and digitally by the RSA and The Southampton Collective to promote conversations about the city. We may even use these as a starting point for an exhibition of our collective imagination!
Please note that due to an event in Guildhall Square the venue for this event is now at Mettricks, Woolston.
Thursday July 18th
THE SOUTHAMPTON NARRATIVE & CIVIC PRIDE
1730-1930, Mettricks Guildhall
How can we create a shared, positive Southampton story and foster a sense of pride in our city and its people? Put a placeholder in your diary for an opportunity to help shape our City narrative!

SOUTHAMPTON DEMOCRACY – WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
On May 23rd RSA Southampton hosted a vibrant discussion on the future of democracy in our city at the cozy Mettricks, Guildhall.
Just 24 hours before the event, the Prime Minister called for a General Election, adding a sense of urgency and relevance to our debate. Chaired by Spencer Bowman (FRSA) who demonstrated his passion for local politics, Darren Paffey and Daniel Fitzhenry graced us with their insights, shedding light on the democratic process and what could lie ahead for Southampton beyond the General Election on July 4th.
Emphasising the current opportunity for devolution, the Centre for the South's report "How Do We Solve A Problem Like Devolution" which was co-authored by Hannah Dalgleish (FRSA) was also published in May. The report highlights many of the themes we discussed - Including the fractious history of devolution discussions in the region and unclear geographic boundaries. It also emphasises the imminent opportunity for change and the necessity of building a coalition across the region to avoid the pitfalls of the past.
Supported by the RSA we are hoping to collaborate with interested groups in taking the devolution debate to other towns and cities in the region – more information soon!
SUPPORTED EVENTS
The Southampton Fellows are an engaged group and support many events and organisations in Southampton and beyond that align with the RSAs vision for a regenerative future.
Local is the new global (film premiere): This film by the Southampton Climate Action Network (SoCAN) examines doughnut economics and community wealth and how both can help build an economy fit for the 21st century. A few tickets are still available!
What AI means for education: This RSA event features the founder of the Khan Academy discussing the impact of AI on education as we prepare our young people for an increasingly digital future - a topic we are hoping to discuss in the Autumn.
