RS Round-Up 15 August: Supporting refugees in Dorset, our policy proposals for the UK and come and volunteer with us in Cyprus!

This week we share news of our work in the UK to support refugees arriving on the Bibby Stockholm barge, and what we think the UK should do for refugees. Plus, we are looking for volunteers for our Dignity Centre in Cyprus!

Ready to support in Dorset

The first people were moved to the Bibby Stockholm barge in Dorset last week, and we continue to stand in solidarity with all refugees and strongly oppose this act of performative cruelty. As you may have seen from the news, things are quite chaotic on the ground, but we remain ready to setup a humanitarian response that answers the evolving needs of those affected. Stay tuned for updates on our website or via your preferred social media platform (Facebook, Instagram, X - formerly Twitter)

What the UK should do for refugees

The answer for us is simple. Put dignity first. We believe that a life with dignity is a basic human right and our goal is therefore to create a more compassionate approach to the ways we, as a society, receive and support people seeking safety and a better life.

We have put together six policy proposals for the UK to make this happen:

  1. Give people the opportunity to live somewhere they can be safe and independent?
  2. Allow asylum seekers to work as soon as they arrive?
  3. Uphold international law and allow asylum seekers to remain in the UK while their claim is assessed?
  4. Hear all asylum claims humanely and fairly?
  5. ?Process all asylum claims swiftly?
  6. Stop the boats by creating safe and accessible ways for people to apply for asylum?
