Our Investigation
Our lab recently had the opportunity to dissect what seemed to be an RS-232 transceiver by Maxim. Interestingly, two samples lay before us: one labeled as crafted in the Philippines and the other in Thailand.
For context, in our line of work, a genuine item - referred to as the 'gold sample' - often stands beside the test subject, serving as a benchmark.
Externally, these twins seemed nearly identical. Weight, texture, and print mirrored what one would expect from a genuine Maxim product. But appearances, especially in our world, can be misleading.
Using a holistic approach of visual inspection, detailed printing scrutiny, and component dissection, we dove into the case. Although X-ray analysis was not part of this particular search, nothing escaped our trained eyes.
The Golden Standard Illuminates
This is where our trusted 'gold sample' – a verified, genuine product – becomes indispensable. Against this benchmark, we minutely examined the test sample.
The discrepancies were blatant. Both the overall appearance and the finer printing details varied between our gold and test samples. And while every aspect seemed to fit the standard datasheet parameters on the surface, a counterfeit's true nature always finds a way to peek through.

For one, there were no signs of any refurbishments, re-printings, or usage. A clear indication that the test sample was born with one nefarious purpose: to mimic Maxim's original.
And yet, as experienced as counterfeiters might be, perfection remains elusive. The devil, as they say, is in the details. An in-depth look into the Product Outline Drawing (POD) revealed the test sample's dimensions fell short of the expected mark, betraying its counterfeit origins.
Our golden sample, when measured against the Product Outline Drawing (POD) specifications, was flawless. The counterfeit, however, stumbled here. Even a micrometer's deviation can expose an impostor, as it did in this case.
