Roy Hunter at the Bronx- Chap 7
In the previous article we read that Roy would not remain at Yale to pursue his doctorate. In this Chapter, we will see Roy at New York University at one of its most grandiose expansions in the Bronx, University Heights. This campus was still under development when Roy arrived in 1912. The beautiful and inspiring Hall of Fame colonnade was just reaching completion, perfecting the ensemble of the Hall of Fame and Gould Memorial Library. This chapter will briefly explore NYU beginnings and the vision and development of University Heights. It was at this campus where Roy enrolled as a doctoral candidate in the Graduate School while being employed as an assistant instructor in Physics. The courses Roy assisted were in Mechanics, Heat, and Sound; Magnetism, Electricity, and Light; and in laboratory exercises of these courses. As a doctoral candidate, Roy was required to have three years of resident graduate study. The Group Committee for the Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences would prescribe Roy's course of study. Roy's thesis needed to be both experimental and theoretical (to be discussed in the next chapter).
This chapter will end at the two-year mark in Roy's progress toward his PhD. In the next three years at NYU, Roy’s life will change at the very pinnacle of his academic quest. In fact, the entire world was about to change. ?
