Rowing Together: How to Align Your Team Around Transformative Change

By David. Hermann , CEO of hermanngroup

Imagine your team as a crew rowing a boat. Some are pulling hard to the left, others to the right. You're exhausted, going nowhere, while competitors zoom past. Sound familiar?

The Problem: Team Misalignment

Most teams struggle with a fundamental challenge: working hard but not working together. When team members aren't aligned, energy gets wasted, morale drops, and progress stalls. I've seen promising companies crumble because they couldn't get everyone pulling in the same direction.

The Painful Reality of Misalignment

Think about the last project where communication broke down. Missed deadlines, frustrated team members, and leadership scratching their heads wondering what went wrong. This isn't just frustrating—it's expensive. Misaligned teams bleed resources and potential.

The Exciting Possibility

What if your team could move with the precision of a synchronized swimming team? What if every team member understood not just what they're doing, but why they're doing it? This isn't a fantasy—it's achievable.

The Solution: Crafting Clarity and Connection

Here's how to transform your team from a collection of individuals to a unified force:

Start with a vision so clear that a new team member could understand it in 30 seconds. When I helped a tech startup refine their vision from "disrupt the industry" to "Make data analysis accessible to everyone through user-friendly AI tools," everything changed. Suddenly, every developer, designer, and marketer could see their direct impact.

What if every team member understood not just what they're doing, but why they're doing it?

Communication isn't about sending emails—it's about creating a narrative. I once worked with a CEO who began every meeting by connecting that day's agenda to the company's broader vision. This wasn't just talk; it was a consistent, powerful reminder of why we were all there.

Create genuine spaces for dialogue. Town halls, anonymous suggestion boxes, team retrospectives—these aren't just HR checkboxes. They're opportunities for everyone to feel heard and invested in the journey.

Align your actions with your words. Nothing destroys team trust faster than leadership saying one thing and doing another. If you claim innovation is a priority, your budget and promotions need to reflect that.

Celebrate every win, no matter how small. One leader I know created a "Vision Wall" where team members could publicly share how their work that week supported broader goals. This wasn't just motivational—it made the abstract concrete.

The Transformative Potential

When a team truly aligns, magic happens. Communication flows. Creativity sparks. Obstacles become opportunities. You're not just working together; you're creating something greater than any individual could achieve alone.

Alignment isn't a destination—it's a journey. Keep communicating, stay flexible, and remember: your team's potential is limited only by its collective imagination and commitment.

Are you ready to transform how your team works? I'd love to chat.

“What if your team understood not only what they’re doing, but why they’re doing it?”. Helping my teams fo visualize the bigger picture, and to have a comprehensive understanding of how each person’s role contributes to the greater whole is essential. I also find that it helps generate empathy which further drives camaraderie. The rowing metaphor is an excellent example.

David, This subject is something that very few business people can do...it is rare. My favorite quote from your article is: "When a team truly aligns, magic happens. Communication flows. Creativity sparks. Obstacles become opportunities. You're not just working together; you're creating something greater than any individual could achieve alone."
