"Routes 25" article on China outbound market and thoughts today
The Routes Magazine 25th annuversary edition included my article on China outbound tourism market (P. 69, link below). That was in 2019 right before the pandemic. Though the international travel landscape has been completely disrupted, I am confident that the Chinese pent-up demand for outbound travel will again place China as the top source country once the international borders are re-opened. China, however, is having a busy 2022 with three major games: the Beijing Winter Olympics in February, the?World?University?Games?June 26 – July 7 in Chengdu and the Asian Games in September in Hangzhou. This may mean that we won’t see the influx of Chinese travelers until 2023 or beyond, pending the COVID-related international restrictions. In addition, a relatively subtle aspect is Chinese perception of how much they are welcomed or unwelcomed by a destination. Let travel help elevate people’s mutual understanding and appreciation! Cheers to a better future!
