A roundup of what you missed ...

Welcome to our monthly Highlights of the Electronics Industry, Obsolescence Management and at Winslow Adaptics.

On?#internationalwomensday?we celebrate this wonderful lady, Mandi Orton, she is an inspiration to so many. Her son Connor sadly ended his life in March 2020 after struggling with mental health problems.

Mandi Orton

Connor was cherished and loved by everyone around him. Together with her husband?Rob Orton, her family, friends and the Winslow Team we are raising money throughout March to raise vital awareness and donations to PAPYRUS.

PAPYRUS is the UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide and the promotion of positive mental health and emotional wellbeing in people aged 35 and under. They believe that no young person should have to struggle alone with thoughts of suicide.

PAPYRUS exists to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives, by shattering the stigma surrounding suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to emotional distress.

Mandi says “if we can help just one person or family not go through the pain and heartache we have, then it will be worth it!”

If you are able, donations can be made through our just giving page

February LinkedIn Poll results

In February, we asked our contacts and followers, 'Are supply chain shortages of semiconductors holding your business back'?

You responded ...

Yes, still a problem - 83%

No, pretty much back to normal - 17%

Thank you for joining in. Sure signs we are not out of the woods yet!

(If you are in the 83%, please talk to us, we may be able to help or introduce you to somebody who can)!

Winslow History

From our base in the beautiful Brecon Beacons in Wales, Winslow Adaptics has close to 50 years’ experience of offering innovative interconnect and adapter solutions for Electronics Design, Manufacture, and Obsolescence professionals.

In that time, Winslow have helped hundreds of top-tier OEM and SME customers modify their hardware and software solutions to changing technologies, hence prolonging the lifecycles of countless items of electronic equipment.

Winslow's Timeline:

  • 1977 – The Winslow brand was founded by David Winslow in Southeast England.
  • 1982 - The company relocates its factory to Wales, adding Toolmaking and Injection Moulding to its services.
  • 1984 – Winslow acquired the rights to Jermyn Manufacturing’s range of transistor clips, stand-offs, sockets, heatsinks and other associated semiconductor accessories, still manufactured today!
  • mid-1980s - Winslow Adaptics becomes the largest exporter of stamped & formed contact IC sockets.
  • 1989 – The company becomes known as ‘Winslow Adaptics Ltd’ and remains a family owned, independent business to this day.
  • 1992 – Sees the launch of the Adaptics Program – a range of custom and off-the-shelf IC footprint / technology adapters.
  • 1993 – Winslow Adaptics moves to its present location in the stunning Brecon Beacons.
  • 1993 – Teri-Ann Winslow joins the family business
  • 1994 - Winslow Exhibit at Electronica (see photo in Teri-Ann's anniversary below)!

As we look toward our 50th Anniversary, our AS 9100 D approved facility continues to offer innovative solutions to Electronic Component Obsolescence and supply chain failures. Winslow is committed to the growth of its services and manufacturing processes for the future.

Teri-Ann's 30th Anniversary at Winslow Adaptics

Just a week ago, we celebrated Teri-Anns' 30th Anniversary, here at Winslow Adaptics! This is what she proudly posted...

Teri-Ann Winslow and Dave Winslow - Electronica 1994.

It's 30 years today since I joined Winslow Adaptics!

I’ve been thinking back to that first day, a complete career change for me. As with every new job it was somewhat daunting! I’d left home some 15 years earlier and now it felt like I was coming back to the fold, working alongside my brother and having my dad as the boss! Had I made the right choice here?

I won’t lie it was a challenge at times. I quickly learnt that this was business and certainly not the easy route to the top. I had to show my worth, work hard to gain respect from the rest of the workforce and learn to accept (gracefully) structured criticism from Dave (dad didn’t exist in the workplace!)

I love being a part of the innovative team that is Winslow Adaptics today and so glad I stuck out those early, learning years. It’s a great business to be a part of and that’s all down to the people, the respect we have for each other and the knowledge that we share.

Make plans because a shock wave of obsolescence is coming in 2023!

John Dyson put out this obsolescence warning to all chip users ...

Expect electronic product range rationalisation to rear its ugly head again as electronics manufacturers move to obsolete your sub-assemblies and products as supply chain issues continue to bite and demand falls.

Some products that you ordered in 2022 on a 52-week lead time may never arrive as component obsolescence rots through BOMs.

Manufacturers will find that the rising cost of PCB redesign, testing and qualification to suit different chip footprints or technologies cannot be justified against the dwindling sales to those who have been patient enough to wait.

History has a habit of repeating itself. There have been supply chain crises before particularly in the semiconductor sector. Economists seem split on predicting either low-level growth or recession this year, but I think it is fair to say, 2023 will not be a boom year for the UK’s GDP.

Thank you for reading. We look forward to sharing more with you again next month.

Team Winslow.
