Hurricane Dorian hit the Bahamas over Labor Day weekend and sat over the island chain for two days as a category 5 hurricane; Dorian was the strongest hurricane on record to hit the Bahamas, according to the Washington Post.
Much of Dorian’s fury focused on the northern Bahamas. The storm plowed through the island nation as a slow-moving hurricane on Sept. 3, bringing Category 5 winds to Great Abaco and Grand Bahama islands.
The hurricane made landfall at 8:08 p.m. Sept. 3 at Elbow Cay, Abacos. Dorian slowed to a crawl, and for the next 40 hours, unleashed catastrophic damage that flooded homes and destroyed marshlands, reducing an island paradise to a miserable heap.
“We didn’t leave because we’d been through other storms,” one resident told The Post. “But not this. This was nothing like we’ve ever seen.”
Our community's heart went out to them; Florida is less than a 100 miles away and many Bahamians are in our Tampa community as friends and coworkers. Although this was the hardest hit to the island nation in recorded history, these are the times where people who care step up.
We packed over a hundred thousand meals in less than 2 and 1/2 hours. The Rotary Clubs across District 6950 came along with representatives from District 6960 came over to Countryside High School and worked with Palm Harbor, East Lake and Countryside Interact Clubs, Kiwanis, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Lockheed Martin, HCA Healthcare, Goodwill and various churches brought their families and friends to help. Even the items that were leftover were donated locally to Oldsmar Cares, Homeless Empowerment Program and the SafeHouse of Clearwater. This is #Rotary; you can #BeTheInspiration too.
