Rose's Rescue Story

Rose's Rescue Story

In October 2017, I rescued the first sheep at Barn Sanctuary, I named her Rose. She was involved in a bizarre and tragic incident—a high-speed police chase that ended in a crash. Many animals in the trailer she was in didn't survive, but Rose was one of the few who did. The people driving the trailer were charged with over 80 offenses, including animal cruelty.

I named her after my grandmother, Virginia Rose McKernan, who loved sheep and was born in the farmhouse that's part of our sanctuary today. It felt right to honor her memory by naming our first sheep rescue Rose.

Talking about Rose means talking about her resilience and care for others. She's not just any sheep; she's the one everyone else looks up to. When Mike, a young calf, was living in the same barn, she would protect him from any bullying. That protective nature of hers made her a central figure in our sanctuary.

Rose loves simple gestures of affection, like face scratches, and she'll show her trust by nudging your leg when she wants more. It's these small moments that really highlight the bond we've formed.

However, Rose's story isn't without its challenges. She's been dealing with lung disease, a consequence of her traumatic past, and now needs nebulizer treatments. Knowing that our time with her might be limited is hard, but we're dedicated to making every moment count.

Sharing Rose's story is deeply personal to me. It's not just about her survival; it's a reminder of the bigger picture. In the U.S. and around the world, sheep are often exploited for their wool and meat without regard for their welfare. The sheep industry can be harsh, with animals frequently facing poor living conditions, early separation from their mothers, and a lack of basic care. By telling Rose's story, I hope to shed light on these issues and encourage more people to think about the choices they make and how they affect these gentle animals

Rose's resilience, her care for others, and her trust in us despite everything she's been through are a source of inspiration. She's taught me so much about strength, compassion, and the impact we can have on the lives of animals in need. Her story is a testament to why we fight for animal welfare and why we'll continue to do so.

So glad Rose made it … sad ?? about the others .. Daniel keep up your tireless work thank you ?? and to your amazing team ! From downunder keep powering away …
