The lighter pigmented and fruitier style of wines of Pink wine lasted well into the Middle Ages, when the pale clarets from Bordeaux eventually made their debut on the wine world's scene. The name CLARET derives from Claritas, which in latin mean clarity. They actually are the core of the original success of the Bordeaux wine.
Today, the grapes grown on the Bordeaux-Clairet appellation are perhaps the closest wines matching the original wines exported to England in the Middle-Ages. Historically, although it was a Pink color wine, the Claret (Clairet in French) is the true ancestor of the Red modern Bordeaux wines. In 1152, the marriage of Alienor with Henry II brought Aquitaine to the English crown and further promoted the Claret in England.
But, make no mistake, today, when asking for a Claret, you seldom will get a Rosé wine but rather a classic red Bordeaux ! So, don’t let the claret rosé loose you !
