Rooting for the Future: Charting the Path toward Environmental Sustainability

In the face of escalating climate changes and environmental degradation, the need for sustainable solutions has never been more pressing. One such solution, often overlooked but profoundly impactful, is the simple act of planting trees.

Trees are more than just a bunch of leaves and branches and are the unsung restorative heroes of supporting a robust green ecosystem. Trees are essential for a healthy planet because they not only prevent soil erosion but also cleanse the air we breathe and provide a habitat for various species of birds, among other animals. Planting trees becomes a ray of hope in Kenya, where deforestation and land degradation pose a danger to the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Good business practice has evolved, defining the best Kenyan corporates as those that are not only profitable entities but also stewards of the environment where they operate. Beyond the pursuit of profits, businesses have a responsibility to contribute positively to the communities and ecosystems that support their operations.

Furthermore, the success of environmental sustainability initiatives in Kenya relies on collaboration among corporates, government bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and local communities.

CIC Group has been championing the greening agenda, which has seen over 1000 trees planted over time in Nairobi, Kiambu, and Kajiado counties in the last 4 years. As a member of the cooperative movement, CIC has been collaborating with cooperative entities and like minded partners in the drive towards increasing the forest cover.

Most recently the staff participated in the 8th edition of the Kereita Forest Challenge - an initiative run by the East African Wild Life Society (EAWLS) in collaboration with Kijabe Environment Volunteers (KENVO) and the Kenya Forest Service (KFS). Launched in 2014, this annual event seeks to raise funds for the rehabilitation and restoration of lost forest cover in key water catchment areas in Kenya. This year’s edition, saw over 331 participants, including CIC staff taking part where over KES 5 million was raised. CIC’s contribution will result to 750 trees planted and nurtured by KFS. ?
